The Importance of Non Comedogenic Products for Acne
The term “non-comedogenic” is used for make up and skincare
that have ingredients that doesn’t cause breakouts. They are formulated in a
way that they wont cause clogging pores, which is one of the main causes of
acne. The term itself is derived from this—does not cause comedones or
block pores. Products aimed towards acne-prone or sensitive skin should have
this label.
Non-comedogenic ingredients
Ingredients that are determined to be noncomedogenic undergo
the rabbit’s ears test. That is, a small amount is applied to rabbit ears and
see whether a comedone is developed. The accuracy of this test has been under scrutiny
with brands encouraged to go animal testing-free. Still, this is one of the
most widespread tests for comogenicity.
Not all comedogenicity is the same. The scale ranges from
0-5, with the highest being the likeliest to clog pores.
Checking if your skincare or makeup is non-comedogenic
This can be as straightforward as just reading the label.
Products aimed for skin prone to acne should have this highlighted as consumers
are much savvier nowadays.
If you want to be extra careful, you can check the
ingredient list and identify which is comedogenic. It still depends on the
formulation though. For instance, olive oil which has a grade 2 comedogenic is
reduced when diluted down to 25%.
Are all non-comedogenic products guaranteed not to clog pores?
This still depends on a lot of factors. If you have heavily
oily skin, any makeup still has the possibility of congesting your pores. It’s better
to use these types of products in both makeup and skincare, along with any
prescription medication if you are under any by your dermatologist.
